Oral histories: Don Grant talks about picking corn

"I remember it seemed rather futile to take that big wagon out in the field and pick those little ears of corn and throw them in that box, and it took you all morning to get one (wagon) full if you worked like crazy to get it full. And then you went in and you dumped it out and then you went out and did that again... You did that for about a month or month and a half, and you hoped it didn't snow, but it usually rained and it was pretty muddy and messy. There was enough frost on the ears to get your mittens wet early in the morning and then they would stay wet all day even though it warmed up a little. But I kind of liked it. (laughs) It was futile.

And I still think now that was the dumbest thing we ever did on the farm. Throw those things in a box and then go in and dump them out and start all over again. And try to get it done by Thanksgiving."
